A game night with consequences

How to play
Libs After Dark.

Your group supplies the punchlines. The story takes the blame. Here's how to get from a room code to a very questionable dramatic reading.

What you need

Gather your adult friends and give each player a phone, tablet, or computer with a browser and an internet connection. Libs After Dark is free to play, with no accounts or downloads. It's best with 3?8 friends, either together in a room or chatting on a voice call.

From first card to final disaster

  1. Create or join a room

On the play page, enter your name and select Create one. Share the four-letter room code. Friends enter their names and that code, then select Join room.

  2. Let the host set the mood

Before starting, the host can choose the answer-card packs, hand size, and number of full-hand rerolls per round. The default is 15 cards and two rerolls. When everyone has joined, the host starts the game.

  3. Vote for tonight's story

Each round offers five tales from the story collection. Everyone gets one vote. Once the votes are in, the host deals the prompts for the chosen story.

  4. Choose your funniest answers

The story's prompts are shared across the group. Select a card from your hand for each assigned prompt, then play it. A two-card prompt asks you to select both answers in order. Your hand refills after each submission.

Prompts are suggestions, not grammar tests. A person, an object, or an extremely bad idea can all be good answers. If your hand needs a fresh start, use a reroll while you still have one available.

  5. Reveal the story together

When everyone finishes, the host reveals the story a sentence at a time. Read it aloud and discover how the cards fit together. Each answer shows who played it, so nobody can deny responsibility.

  6. Go another round

Once the whole story is revealed, the host can start another round with a fresh vote and a new hand. The game is about making your group laugh; there is no point-scoring phase.

Before someone asks

Can we play remotely?

Yes. Everyone joins the same room in their own browser. Use a voice or video call alongside the game so the group can hear the story and each other's reactions.

Is this a traditional fill-in-the-blank game?

You choose from prewritten answer cards rather than typing nouns or verbs. The stories are written to make wildly different answers fit, so choose what sounds funniest instead of hunting for a particular part of speech.

What happens if someone disconnects?

Keep the original browser tab and player session to reconnect to the room. If a player cannot return, the host can replace that disconnected player with a bot.

Is it suitable for children?

Libs After Dark is designed for adults. Stories and answer cards can include dark humor, sexual references, and offensive material. The host can choose which card packs are enabled before the game.
